What Is Masseter Botox?

Masseter Botox is a medical and cosmetic treatment in which Botox is injected into the masseter muscle. Botox, which contains the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A, is a neuromodulator that prevents the muscles from communicating with the nerves. This relaxes the muscles and keeps them from contracting. Most commonly, Botox is injected into different areas of the face to smooth the skin and reduce signs of aging. However, when Botox is injected into the masseter, it relaxes the muscle, which can alleviate symptoms such as:

  • Teeth grinding
  • Jaw clenching
  • Jaw tension
  • Jaw pain
  • Headaches
  • TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder) symptoms

Masseter Botox can also provide cosmetic benefits, such as giving the jaw a square, defined appearance and adding balance to the facial features.

What Should I Expect During the Procedure?

Before you undergo masseter Botox treatment, the first step will be to have a consultation with one of our expert medical providers. They will have questions about the specific symptoms you’ve experienced to help determine if masseter Botox is the right treatment for you. This meeting will be your chance to ask any questions you have about the treatment. Your provider will also need to know about your current health, medical history, allergies, and any medications you’re taking.

Your masseter Botox treatment will be a quick outpatient procedure administered right at our clinic. To begin the procedure, you’ll have a topical anesthetic applied to the area around your masseter muscle to prevent any pain during the treatment. Your injector professional will then use a very fine needle to inject the Botox into your masseter. The treatment should only take around 15 to 30 minutes to complete, and you can return home immediately after it’s finished.

How Long Is the Recovery Time?

Following your treatment, your provider will give you detailed instructions to ensure that your skin heals properly. For example, you will need to refrain from scratching or rubbing the injection sites for several days. You should also avoid strenuous physical activity for at least 24 hours after masseter Botox treatment.
